ENDS OF THE LAGENDARY COMEDIAN

The fifties, sixties and the early seventies are considered by many as the Golden Age of Tamil Cinema. The era had everything in it to entertain the masses. Moreover actors and actresses were not expected to reinvent themselves much because the general movie-going - public expected them to be doing what they do best on screen. Every established actor or technician proved to be towering personalities and were simply loved by the masses. That was an era when everything fell in place as far as the film world was concerned….with benevolence and fun.

MGR and Sivaji Ganesan were obviously the Kings of the time. The likes of M. N. Nambiyar and Asokan terrorized audiences with villous performances. The stage was absolutely set for a talented 'funny' man like Nagesh. Not a single big film released without the services of Nagesh. Though there were other talented comedians like Chandrababu and Thangavelu at the time, it was clear from box office collections that Nagesh ruled the hearts of movie lovers.

Snapshots into the eventful career of Nagesh spell out absolute brilliance. A role that went down as probably the best comic fare in Tamil Cinema featured in the film 'Thiruvilayadal' (1965). Who can forget the interaction between Nagesh and thespian Sivaji Ganesan? Nagesh as a struggling poet gets divine intervention from Lord Siva (Sivaji Ganesan) and presents the work to the King of the land. The court poet dismisses the poem as having errors in it. The distraught poet (with obvious lure for money) is disappointed big time and reports the happenings to Lord Siva. An outraged Siva debates with the court poet.

Nagesh as the poet sparkled in every shot bringing the roof down with laughter. These are scenes that are hugely popular even with the kids of the 21st century.

As a young boy Nagesh reportedly ran away from home telling his folks that he'd return as a 'big guy'. Nobody took these words seriously. He came over to Chennai and started performing in a theater troupe 'Ragini Drama Troupe' until he was noticed by director Sridhar who cast him in 'Nenjil Oru Aalayam' in which he played the role of a ward boy.

Gradually this thin man with exceptional talent was noticed and was cast in many films. One of the directors who made it a point to work with Nagesh in many of his films was none other than K. Balachander.

The roles Nagesh enacted in 'Server Sundaram' (1964), 'Kadhalikka Neramillai' (1964), 'Kuzhandaiyum Deivamum' (1965), and 'Anbe Vaa' (1966) were all massive successes that were talked about a lot. In 'Server Sundaram' Nagesh played a person who serves at a restaurant but then had dreams to make it big as a film star. Ironically though, his dream materializes. Here was a performance that made the whole of Tamilnadu sit up and take note. The thin funny man had entered the hearts and minds of people indelibly. In 'Anbe Vaa', Nagesh played the role enacted by Walter Slezak in the English classic 'Come September' (Anbe Vaa was an inspired version of Come September in patches). The mastery of Slezak was matched by Nagesh in all respects. (Nagesh played the caretaker of a palatial mansion who rents it out as a hotel in the absence of the owner). The combination scenes that involved MGR and Nagesh were outstanding and oozing with fun.

Nagesh had a long screen association with the Guinness Record holder Manorama and Kumari Sachu. Comedy in the form of dialogue, slapstick and situational humor was explored in many many movies.

The Nagesh – Manorama combination sizzled the screen in movies such as 'Nenjil Nindraval', 'Galatta Kalayanam' and 'Anubhavi Raja Anubhavi' (a song sequence in this film 'Muthukullika Vaareegala' featuring Nagesh and Manorama became a smash hit).

Nagesh prevailed in the industry even after the heydays of MGR and Sivaji Ganesan were over. It was about this time that Nagesh acted in films such as 'Aboorva Raagangal' and 'Sila Nerangalil Sila Manithargal'. The film industry was changing shape and Nagesh was unassailable with his brilliance.

In the 1980s Nagesh acted in films such as 'Thillu Mullu', 'Kadal Meengal', 'Padikkathavan' etc. It was in this period that Nagesh was cast in more serious roles. In a major surprise move Nagesh was cast as a villain in the Kamal Haasan starrer 'Aboorva Sagodharargal'. A spectacular performance form Nagesh in 'Michael Madana Kamarajan' was followed by a beautiful portrayal of a dead boy (Nagesh won rave reviews for this) in the film 'Magalir Mattum'.

Nagesh's association with Kamal Haasan was very fruitful and films like 'Nammavar', 'Avvai Shanmugi', 'Panchathanthiram' etc bear testimony to that.

Nagesh also has the credential of acting with the present generation of actors. With Madhavan (Minnale), Dhanush (Kadhal Kondaein) and Simbu (Saravana) and many more.

The film that saw Kamal Haasan in ten different roles 'Dasavatharam' was Nagesh's last film.

An eventful career like no other. Let's salute the genius that Nagesh was….after all who can forget this thin man with funny looks striding about making people laugh.

A lifetime of making people laugh is over….or is it? Nagesh will continue to make people laugh and get enamored with his performances every time his films are telecast on television and projected in movie theaters. The legacy of Nagesh will
live on….

THE 50TH GOLDEN MOVIE

It is Jeyam Raja who is the going to direct the 50th movie of Ilayathalapathi Vijay. This comes as a surprise since leading directors like Siddique (Friends) and Dharani (Ghilli, Kuruvi) were considered front runners for directing Vijay’s golden jubilee movie.

Jayam Raja has given movies including Jeyam, M. Kumaran S/O Mahalakshmi and Santhosh Subramaniyam and successfully proved his talents. Vijay’s 50th movie will be produced by Jeyam Raja’s home banner and is expected to release by 2010. It remains to be seen whether he will go for an original subject or for a remake, as the director is known as the ‘King’ of remakes as he understands how to add local flavour and nativity to the original subject.

Meanwhile Vijay will be starting with his next movie Vettaikaran soon.

Well readers, today is the release of Bride Wars in Malaysia. And as usual I got a chance to watch Bride Wars while I'm working..Lolz...the movie is nice...really girlfriends out there!! You should watch this movie its really interesting. It all started a two small girls who which to get married in Plaza Hotel in the month of Jun,soon when they grew up all they did together is same. When comes to the proposal of each others lovers also the same proposal. So they when and see US most famous wedding planner Marion St. Claire to arrange they wedding planner. So Marion choose the date for both of them, Emma [Anne Hathaway] choose a different date and also Liv [Kate Hudson] choose the other date so that they can be their Made of Honor for each other but soon things when wrong both date Emma and Liv has been booked by others. Life changes between both of their friendship become worst enemies. Two best friends wants to get married on the same day that they have chosen. Really the story in funny with Kate Hudson and Anne Hathaway.As it happens, this contrived, mean-spirited, unfunny farce feels like the work of someone who hates chick flicks and isn’t all that fond of women in the first place. Hudson and Hathaway are dressed, coifed and photographed to look as unappealing as the shrewish characters they play—Hudson bedraggled, Hathaway hatchet-faced. It takes either perverse malice or sheer ineptitude to make two such beautiful women look this unattractive, with behavior to match; take your pick which is to blame. Candice Bergen and Kristen Johnston also thrash about in the wreckage.Its a friendship story between two best friends.

Shriya is back to Kollywood and with a bang! She has four releases in the next six months — Kandasamy with Vikram, Jaggubhai with Sarath Kumar, Thoranai with Vishal and Kutty opposite Dhanush.

She has probably realised that it is not worth doing itsy-bitsy films in Hollywood and Bollywood with actors who do not have a reach! Now, she is trying to re-invent herself in Tamil by signing films with mid-level heroes and top banners. She has also been shortlisted to play Surya’s heroine in Singam. But the actress, who has seen a lull in her career after Sivaji, says she has not reduced her salary. “I never charged more than what I thought I deserved. I haven’t cut it now to get more offers too,” is her explanation!

INKHEART IS A FASCINATING ADVENTUROUS MOVIE

Today the release of INKHEART and I'm glad to be the 1st person to watch it. Since it today the 1st show I got time while working and watching movie INKHEART...the story was fascinating and adventurous...Brendan Fraser gave the good impact in this movie as a father and a hero....alright then here is the plot of the stories...

Fraser stars as a bookbinder who drags his daughter Maggie (Eliza Bennett) through every dingy old bookstore of Europe, seeking a novel that swallowed his wife (Sienna Guillory) nine years before. Not that he tells Maggie this. But she's smart enough to recall that he hasn't read her a bedtime story ever since Mom disappeared.

Dad, it seems, is a Silvertongue, one of those characters described in the novel he seeks (titled "Inkheart"). In the act of reading a story aloud, he brings that story's reality to his own. Thus, characters from "Inkheart" — the fire-juggler Dustfinger (Paul Bettany) and the villain Capricorn (Andy Serkis) and his henchmen are chasing Dad. And Mom is lost in the book.

And yes, this is awfully similar to last month's "Bedtime Stories," but never mind.

The bad guys catch up and Dad, finally confronted by Dustfinger's desire to go home, enlists wacky, book-collecting Aunt Elinor (Helen Mirren) and the

actual author of "Inkheart" (Jim Broadbent) to help foil the villains, who want Dad to summon up this great special effect called "The Shadow."

The heroes use scenes read aloud from "The Arabian Nights" and "The Wizard of Oz" (a dandy Italian tornado) to escape Capricorn's clutches, and the author tries to scribble new scenes to correct the fix that these folks find themselves in thanks to his dazzling prose.

"The written word. It's a powerful thing. You have to be careful with it!"

The Oscar winners (three of them, if you count Mrs. Bettany, Jennifer Connelly, who has a one-scene cameo) enliven things considerably with just a sprinkle of wit. Fraser and Bettany are mostly reduced to advancing the corny and worn action plot, blathering pages of exposition during the exceedingly dull middle third of "Inkheart."

Funny, Hariharan seems to have done a Shankar Mahadevan here! Nice to hear him express himself in a fast number. Catchy rhythms (some native ones too), lively trumpets, tender guitar sounds that blend with soft female humming in the charanams, all make it a busy number, probably accompanied by some rapid dancing on the screen. The song exhorts youngsters to break out of self-imposed moulds and live life colorfully. Easy lyrics of course, from Muthukumar. Some delicate sangatis from Hariharan,especiall y in ‘koottai nee thaandi vittal’.

Pleasing lyrics for this duet and sung with such fine articulation by both. Conceived on the Natabairavi scale, this song has delicate string sounds, especially violin and guitar built into it. Is that the clarinet that sounds along with the violins 3 minutes into the song? Wispy sangatis! And when the lady goes ‘deham malaraagum’, the flute stylishly goes ‘dha ni ga ri sa’. But at the end of it, you somehow feel the rhythm is too rigid for the mood of the song.

Now, is this a sequel to ‘Dhikku Dhikku’? Strong rhythms and synthesizer sounds that vaguely make you recall Afro-American music. But interestingly conceived and an unconventional voice. Has the song been shot in an exotic locale? Lyrics drip with seduction.

This number shines for Karthik’s fine vocals, good tabla work, very stylish use of harmonica sounds that go ‘sa sa sa sa sa ni---pa, pa ni dha pa’, and the creative blending of ganjira, hand claps and female vocal humming that adds a certain teasing quality to the piece. A song of yearning whose rhythms make you recall some snatches from his own ‘Vaaranam Aayiram’. But likely to be relished as it is well put together. Looks like the Harikamboji scale is used.

Another offshoot of ‘Adiye Kolluthe’ inspiration? Anyway is quite trendy and it is great to see Chinmayi rise to the demands of such a piece. The violins, guitar and other string sounds have been carefully airbrushed into the song, as the rhythms override them all. Could catch the fancy of youngsters if picturised well.

Verdict:

Harris Jayaraj’s crafting is elegant as ever. But what disappoints us here slightly is that the songs have influences of his earlier albums here and there, which could have been avoided. Harris does have it in him to give us many more ‘wah wah’ numbers.

DHANUSH THAN PADIKKATHAVAN

Well friends, I just cam back from watching Padikkathavan at Coliseum...after a few comments that the movie is superb and better than Villu [acted Vijay] released on Pongal...the movie the extremely superb from m point of view...as a fan of Dhanush, once again after Thiruvilaiyadhal Arambam and Yaradi Nee Mohini the Comedy-Romance-Action story hits again in Padikkathavan...Dhanush deserve the best for him in this movie....

The story begins...Radhakrishnan(Dhanush) alias Rocky is an 10th fail youngster who is looked down upon by his father (Pratap Pothen), as the rest of the family of brothers, sister and sister’s-in-law consists of all educated and well placed people. Our hero’s main job is to idle away his time in a mechanic shop with his group of friends (Mayilsami, Nellai Siva and others). ‘Padikathavan and 10th failed’ as his father refers to him, doubles up as a petty goon when his family members are in trouble.

One of his friends suggest that he falls in love with a highly educated girl, so earnestly he looks around by hovering around women’s colleges. So he falls in love with Gayathri (Tamaannah) a rich girl who after a few misunderstandings and dream songs falls for him.

Meanwhile there are some goons after her, as her father is SamarasingaReddy (Suman) a deadly don in Andhra. Our hero saves her from her dad’s rival (Sayaji Shinde) and follows to her home in Hyderabad, where he realizes that another Tirunelveli goon Kasi Anandan (Atul Kulkarni) has put a prize on his head!

In the first half, the light hearted comedy of Dhanush is thoroughly enjoyable, especially his one liners and dialogues like Enna mathiri pasangala partha pidikathu. Parka parka thaan pidikkum. The dialogue that Suman mouths that those who are educated think only of themselves while the uneducated have consideration for his fellowmen is in bad taste especially when the government policy is for total literacy.

Dhanush is in top form as he has never danced so well and has improved a lot in action (the climax fight is outstanding) and comedy while keeping his boy-next-door image intact. He has scored in the first half with his subtle comedy and clever one-liners that gets him the maximum claps.

Today is Pongal Celebration, and as a christian I got a chance to celebrate among friends and with other universities student from UPM and MASTERS SKILLS at KL Tower. It was a wonderful experience celebrating with friends for the first time. It was 28 student from Unitar [University Tun Abdul Razak], separated 3 to 4 people in a group. What is Pongal?

Pongal is the only festival of Hindu that follows a solar calendar and is celebrated on the fourteenth of January every year. Pongal has astronomical significance: it marks the beginning of Uttarayana, the Sun's movement northward for a six month period. In Hinduism, Uttarayana is considered auspicious, as opposed to Dakshinaayana, or the southern movement of the sun. All important events are scheduled during this period. Makara Sankranthi refers to the event of the Sun entering the zodiac sign of Makara or Capricorn.

In Hindu temples bells, drums, clarinets and conch shells herald the joyous occasion of Pongal. To symbolize a bountiful harvest, rice is cooked in new pots until they boil over. Some of the rituals performed in the temple include the preparation of rice, the chanting of prayers and the offering of vegetables, sugar cane and spices to the gods. Devotees then consume the offerings to exonerate themselves of past sins.

Pongal signals the end of the traditional farming season, giving farmers a break from their monotonous routine. Farmers also perform puja to some crops, signaling the end of the traditional farming season. It also sets the pace for a series of festivals to follow in a calendar year. In fact, four festivals are celebrated in Tamil Nadu for four consecutive days in that week. 'Bogi' is celebrated on January 13, 'Pongal' on Jan 14, 'Maattuppongal' on Jan 15, and 'Thiruvalluvar Day' on Jan 16.

The festival is celebrated for four days. On, the first day, Bhogi, the old clothes and materials are thrown away and fired, marking the beginning of a new life. The second day, the Pongal day, is celebrated by boiling fresh milk early in the morning and allowing it to boil over the vessel - a tradition that is the literal translation for Pongal. People also prepare savories and sweets, visit each other's homes, and exchange greetings. The third day, Mattu Pongal, is meant to offer thanks to the cows and buffaloes, as they are used to plough the lands. On the last day, Kanum Pongal, people go out to picnic.

A festival called Jalli kathu is held in Madurai, Tiruchirapalli and Tanjavur,all in Tamil Nadu, on this day. Bundles of money are tied to the horns of Pongal ferocious bulls which the villagers try to retrieve. Everyone joins in the community meal, at which the food is made of the freshly harvested grain. This day is named and celebrated as Tamilian Tirunal in a fitting manner through out Tamil Nadu.

Thus, the harvest festival of Pongal symbolizes the veneration of the first fruit. The crop is harvested only after a certain time of the year, and cutting the crop before that time is strictly prohibited. Even though Pongal was originally a festival for the farming community, today it is celebrated by all. In south India, all three days of Pongal are considered important. However, those south Indians who have settled in the north usually celebrate only the second day. Coinciding with Makara Sankranti and Lohri of the north, it is also called Pongal Sankranti.

The First Day


This first day is celebrated as Bhogi festival in honor of Lord Indra, the supreme ruler of clouds that give rains. Homage is paid to Lord Indra for the abundance of harvest, thereby bringing plenty and prosperity to the land. Another ritual observed on this day is Bhogi Mantalu, when useless household articles are thrown into a fire made of wood and cow-dung cakes. Girls dance around the bonfire, singing songs in praise of the gods, the spring and the harvest. The significance of the bonfire, in which is burnt the agricultural wastes and firewood is to keep warm during the last lap of winter.


The Second Day


On the second day of Pongal, the puja or act of ceremonial worship is performed when rice is boiled in milk outdoors in a earthenware pot and is then symbolically offered to the sun-god along with other oblations. All people wear traditional dress and markings, and their is an interesting ritual where husband and wife dispose off elegant ritual utensils specially used for the puja. In the village, the Pongal ceremony is carried out more simply but with the same devotion. In accordance with the appointed ritual a turmeric plant is tied around the pot in which the rice will be boiled. The offerings include the two sticks of sugar-cane in background and coconut and bananas in the dish. A common feature of the puja, in addition to the offerings, is the kolam, the auspicious design which is traditionally traced in white lime powder before the house in the early morning after bathing.



The Third Day

The third day is known as Mattu Pongal, the day of Pongal for cows. Multi-colored beads, tinkling bells, sheaves of corn and flower garlands are tied around the neck of the cattle and then are worshiped. They are fed with Pongal and taken to the village centers. The resounding of their bells attract the villagers as the young men race each other's cattle. The entire atmosphere becomes festive and full of fun and revelry. Arati is performed on them, so as to ward off the evil eye. According to a legend, once Shiva asked his bull, Basava, to go to the earth and ask the mortals to have an oil massage and bath every day and to eat once a month. Inadvertently, Basava announced that everyone should eat daily and have an oil bath once a month. This mistake enraged Shiva who then cursed Basava, banishing him to live on the earth forever. He would have to plough the fields and help people produce more food. Thus the association of this day with cattle.


The Fourth Day

The Fourth day is known as Knau or Kannum Pongal day. On this day, a turmeric leaf is washed and is then placed on the ground. On this leaf are placed, the left overs of sweet Pongal and Venn Pongal, ordinary rice as well as rice colored red and yellow, betel leaves, betel nuts, two pieces of sugarcane, turmeric leaves, and plantains. In Tamil Nadu women perform this ritual before bathing in the morning. All the women, young and old, of the house assemble in the courtyard. The rice is placed in the centre of the leaf, while the women ask that the house and family of their brothers should prosper. Arati is performed for the brothers with turmeric water, limestone and rice, and this water is sprinkled on the kolam in front of the house.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY A.R RAHMAN JI

Easily the most successful Indian musician to go global, A. R. Rahman turns 43 today. Having started his career in tinsel town with Mani Ratnam's 1992 film 'Roja', the talented Rahman has literally taken the world by storm with his magnificent orchestration and apt music.

A major strength of this musical wizard is the art of fusing many styles of music to produce an end result that is so very soothing and energizing with the desired mood…. an incredible ability and yet something that A. R. Rahman does quite naturally. Apart from his millions of Indian fans who shower accolades on him by the hour, Rahman's incredible talent had attracted the attention of the famed TIME Magazine which referred to him as the 'Mozart of Madras'.

Born as A. S. Dileep Kumar in the year 1966 in Chennai, the young lad has always been associated with music, thanks to his family. Losing his father at the tender age of nine, young Dileep's family was involved in renting out musical instruments. In the late 1970s his family converted to Islam and Dilip Kumar became Allah Rakkha Rahman.

Passionate about music all the time, young Rahman worked his way up to the recognition level by composing jingles for commercials, working on the background scores for documentaries and television programs. The big break came his way when Mani Ratnam approached him for the film 'Roja'. A seldom talked about fact is that A. R. Rahman is the recipient of the prestigious Rajat Kamal Award for Best Music Director at the National Film Awards. He received this award on debut. Such an instance was never heard of before.

A musical genius was born. All spotlights were turned on him and scores of Tamil films followed. 'Puthiya Mugam', 'Gentleman', 'Kizhakku Cheemayile', 'Uzhvan', 'Thiruda Thiruda', 'Duet', 'May Maadham', 'Kadhalan', 'Bombay' etc. Almost all the songs that featured in these films went on to become big time chartbusters. A. R. Rahman had taken the world of Tamil Cinema by storm with his magnificent style of music. The musical genius was bestowed with an appropriate title 'Isai Puyal' (musical storm).

Soon after, Bollywood came knocking on his doors and A. R. Rahman's tunes in the blockbuster 'Rangeela' set the whole of India dancing to his tunes gleefully. The 'Mozart of Madras' started to spell magic with every single outing and he had become hot property.

Minsara Kanavu (Tamil), Kabhi Na Kabhi (Hindi), Fire (Hindi), 'Kadhal Desam', 'Jeans' (Tamil), 'Taal' (Hindi), 'Padayappa', 'Kadhalar Dinam' (Tamil), 'Lagaan' (Hindi), 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh' (Hindi), 'Boys' (Tamil), 'Warriors of Haven and Earth' (Mandarin & Japanese), 'Rang De Basanti' (Hindi), 'Sillunu Oru Kadhal' (Tamil), 'Ayutha Ezhuthu / Yuva' (Tamil / Hindi), Elizabeth: The Golden Age' (English), 'Jodha Akbar', 'Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na' (Hindi), Sakkarakatti (Tamil), 'Yuvvraaj', 'Ghajini' (Hindi), 'Slumdog Millionaire' (English) etc. have all rocked audiences. A. R. Rahman had become a world phenomenon by now….

A. R. Rahman's international recognition for the English film 'Slumdog Millionaire' is simply outstanding. The Los Angeles Film Critics Award, New York Online Film Critics Award, International Press Academy Satellite Award, Black Reel Award and the San Diego Film Critics Award.

A. R. Rahman has been nominated for the Golden Globe Awards for 'Slumdog Millionaire' and also at the Broadcast Film Critics Association Award. Results are awaited….but Rahman is expected to win these as well.

The music wizard has many films up his sleeve and they include 'Asokavanam' (Tamil), 'Puli' (Telugu), 'Sultan: the warrior' and 'Endhiran' (Tamil).

Apart from movies, Rahman is also known for his albums that have gone on to break collection records. 'Vande Mataram', a patriotic album that was composed in the 1997 to commemorate India's fiftieth year of Independence is something every patriotic Indian cherishes close to his or her heart.

Going by the host of recognition this incredible talent is receiving, the Oscars might not be far away. We surely have a genius in our backyard who is sought after internationally. Let's hope A. R. Rahman continues to do what he does masterfully – sway our hearts with his enthralling music.

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (June)

The inevitable sequel to last year’s surprise hit features more action, more laughs, and more shape-shifting robots. Michael Bay and Shia LeBoef return as director and star respectively with the astoundingly attractive Megan Fox as Shia’s love interest, a more international battleground and the eagerly anticipated introduction of fan favourite Soundwave.



The Pink Panther 2 (February 2009)

Moviegoers might well be tempted by the impressive cast lining up for this wholly unnecessary sequel to a completely superfluous continuation of the once mighty comedy franchise. Steve Martin, Jean Reno, John Cleese and Andy Garcia may be acting greats, but for signing up to this they should hang their heads in shame.



Night at the Museum 2: Battle of the Smithsonian (May)

A repeat of 2006’s ‘museum comes to life’ cameo jamboree with more or less everyone except Robin Williams back at the end of May to ham it up for the entertainment of young and undemanding cinemagoers. The film will need something very special in terms of advance reviews to give it any commercial visibility in what promises to be a very busy month at the movies. Ben Stiller, Amy Adams, Owen Wilson and Ricky Gervais are already crossing their fingers.



Fast & Furious (June)

Fourth in the franchise but (and pay attention, there will be a test) occupying the number three slot in the series narrative, the movie will take the story back to its very beginnings. Paul Walker and Vin Diesel reunite in the franchise that inspired a million minor motoring offences.


Inkheart (January)

Brendan Fraser, fast becoming Hollywood’s go-to guy whenever kiddie-friendly action is required, joins with Andy Serkis, the man behind Gollum and King Kong, in this umpteenth attempt at the now-traditional ‘storybook miraculously comes to life’ plot. A little early for the half term crowd, but Fraser’s undeniable charm should bring in a few viewers.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (July)

Playing fast and loose with the accepted chronology of the age of the dinosaurs this third instalment of the CGI school holiday favourite has the primitive mammal heroes of the first two films somehow getting mixed up with a ‘lost world’ of surviving dinosaurs trapped beneath a glacier. John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, and Denis Leary provide voices for the computer created critters. Certain to both entertain undemanding under-fives and infuriate palaeontologists in equal measure, this has the air of being the last film in the series.



Terminator Salvation (June)

The long-awaited ‘future war’ segment of the Terminator saga, previously only hinted at in the first three movies, dominates proceedings in Charlie’s Angels director McG’s bold reawakening of the killer robot franchise. Christian Bale, fresh from his spectacular triumph as one fanboy hero in Dark Knight essays another - John Connor, charismatic leader of the anti-Skynet forces who the Terminators have been trying to eliminate for the last three films. Roland Kickinger will be the principal Terminator this because Arnold Schwarzenegger is said to be too busy running California to appear as the iconic cyborg killing machine and Anton Yelchin, Sam Worthington and Helena Bonham-Carter are along for the ride.



Monsters vs. Aliens (April)

A CGI mock-B-movie with a distinctly eclectic cast list - Kiefer Sutherland, Hugh Laurie, and Stephen Colbert lend their voices., Monsters v Aliens will go some of the way towards sating the enormous demand for a second Incredibles movie. Reese Witherspoon provides the voice of a young Californian woman who grows to gigantic size, after a freak meteorite encounter, and is recruited into a secret agency of super-freaks who are sent to battle a gigantic alien robot.


X-Men Origins: Wolverine (May)

Hugh Jackman’s back for an X-Men prequel set 17 years before the action of the first movie.The film traces the early career of Logan, the indestructible mutant who will one day be X-Man Wolverine. Cameos from future X-Men and the chance to see how Logan acquired his deadly claws and curious hairdo give the film a geek power that will set the internet buzzing ahead of the premiere. It will be interesting to see how this performs after the third X-Men movie was seen by many to be something of a mis-step in the X-franchise.



Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (July)

Harry Potter fans will already have a fairly good idea of what happens in this, the sixth film in the hugely popular boy wizard film adapted from JK Rowling’s all-conquering books. It was an early script draft of this film that prompted Rowling to ‘out’ Dumbledore while promoting the final Potter book.

ANUSHKA AJITHKUMAR CELEBRATES 1ST BIRTHDAY

TARGETING ON SURYA FOR AADHAVAN

Its Aadhavan next for Surya after completion of his current movie Ayan. Nayantara is cast opposite to him in this movie Adhavan and KS Ravikumar is directing this movie. The film is produced by Udayanidhi Stalin who had earlier produced Kuruvi.

Suriya will next play a superhero in UTV Productions’ Mugamoodi, which will be directed by Mysskin. Surya who recently got a 6 pack for his Vaaranam Aayiram is said to have done a daring stunt scene in Africa for his upcomming movie Ayan. One of the fights is supposed to have mind blowing action, and involves Surya fighting at the tip of a 600-feet valley.

Aadhavan is set to get rolling in early 2009 after KS Ravikumar finishes his Sarath-Shriya starrer Jaggubhai and Suriya finishes his Ayan opposite Tamanna.

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians will have to pay more to watch Hollywood films in the cinemas if a proposal by the Malaysian Film Producers Association is accepted by the government.

The association wants the ticket price for Hollywood movies to be hiked to protect local feature films.

Its president, Ahmad Puad Onah, said the higher ticket prices was among proposals the association would submit to the National Film Development Corporation soon.

"Our members agree that only by hiking the admission price of Hollywood movies will Malaysians go to watch local movies."

He said although the local film industry had been on an upward trend over the past two years, the current economic uncertainties had stunted growth.

"All six local films released during the school holidays have under-performed.

"One of the reasons cited for the poor performance is that they had to compete against Hollywood blockbusters."

The films -- Wayang, Selamat Pagi Cinta, Antoo Fighter, Los & Faun, Cicakman 2: Planet Hitam and Histeria -- had to compete against Hollywood big-budget movies such as The Day The Earth Stood Still, Bolt, Twilight and Madagascar 2.

Antoo Fighter and Cicakman 2: Planet Hitam, which had been expected to be a hit, failed to score with movie-goers, he said.

"We are sure that if ticket prices for local movies are reduced, more people will watch them."

Ahmad Puad said such a policy was in place in Indonesia.

"In Indonesia, the ticket prices for Hollywood movies are higher than Indonesian movies.

"It has helped the growth of the film industry."

He said the association would propose that ticket prices for Hollywood movies be increased to RM20. Now, ticket prices for all movies are between RM9 and RM12.

On why ticket prices for local movies should not be lowered instead, Ahmad Puad replied: "That will not be fair to our producers."

He said the move would give local films the edge when competing with Hollywood blockbusters.

"It is timely as some of today's locally-made movies are on par with foreign movies in terms of quality."

In fact, it would encourage local producers to invest more in their movie production, he said.

Other recommendations to be submitted included better incentives for filmmakers and a revision of the compulsory screening scheme.

He said 35 local movies were expected to be released next year.

"But if we follow the current scheme, only 22 films will get shown."

Under the scheme, only two local films are allowed to be screened a month. Also, no local movie will be screened during the fasting month.
